HEAD TRAINER & OWNER
Janet Cody
Janet Cody is the owner and founder of Cody’s Dog Training. Janet received a B.S. Degree in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Georgia and worked as a Registered Physical Therapist in seven states. As a Staff Therapist, Senior Physical Therapist and Director of Physical Therapy in various departments, she specialized in pediatric, acute care and orthopedic physical therapy. Janet uses her training in kinesiology to assist her in analysing postures and movements of a dog in relation to their behaviours.
In 2008 Janet trained for and provided Home Litter Care to a litter of Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB) puppies. The brood and her puppies lived at her home for five weeks, being socialized and nurtured during this critical time of their lives. She then began raising a puppy out of that litter, Garth. Over the next 8 years she had 9 more litters and raised 9 more labs and shepherds using the food-reward and relationship-centered training protocol from Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
In 2017, Janet graduated from Cesar Millan’s Fundamentals I & II class where she learned the principles of dog psychology and human skills to achieve a balanced dog. Learning the leadership skills necessary for human-dog interactions remains a key principle of Cesar’s training.
Since 2011, she began providing private pet sitting, dog walking and dog training. Just like physical therapists who use a variety of techniques to treat patients, she thinks that dog owners and dogs need the same options in training methods. Using techniques from GEB, she values positive reinforcement and relationship-centered training methods to achieve a balanced dog that is obedient and positively connected to its owner. Using principles that she learned from studying with Cesar Millan, she teaches leadership principles and dog psychology for the owners. She has studied with Heather Beck for working with the aggressive dog as well as using the Transitional Leash, also called The Sidekick from Heather’s Heroes. Last, she also utilizes Jan Fennell’s Dog Listener approach based on wolf pack behavior for modifying dog behavior. Any negative reinforcement training methods are reserved only for situations where a dog’s life is at stake (snakes, chasing cars, etc). She has worked with puppies/adolescent/adult dogs progressing through their normal development as well as those who have developed behavioral issues ranging from mild manner problems to aggression. Her overall goal is to help owners to be calm, confident leaders of their dogs so that they can have a great relationship together.
She is a Certified Dog Trainer and is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals.
